New Year: Get Writing, Get Flashy!

If you’ve wanted to get into writing in 2020 then perhaps starting small will help – and Flash Fiction is the place to start. Normally a ‘short short story’ of only a few hundred words, Flash Fiction also allows many ‘rules’ to be chucked out of the window. Because they are so short and take no more than a few minutes to read they can take forms that wouldn’t work for any other type of writing.

Fosseway member Anne Howkins has a particular fondness for Flash Fiction and has attended courses on the subject that have had a big impact on her writing. One of her latest pieces was published on Lunate Fiction’s website a few days ago: “What Might Have Been” .

On Thursday 9 January Anne will be giving a workshop on Flash Fiction and it’s open to everyone interested in making 2020 the year they start writing. It may also prove useful for those who have been writing for a while but would like a bit of a change. We run a Flash Fiction Competition in the summer so you may well pick up some handy tips!

The workshop will have some interesting activities based around unusual prompts but the overall aim of the evening is to have “some fun with words”. For those who would like to attend but are anxious about being put on the spot, don’t worry, no-one will make you read anything out. Besides, Nick and Clair are likely to be chipping in often enough to cover for everyone else ๐Ÿ˜‰

Anne says: “Flash can be any genre, so you can write sci-fi, dystopia, romance… The aim is to look at different sources of inspiration and forms, all of which can be transferred to longer pieces of work. ย I hope you will leave having been challenged, with a head full of ideas, and the confidence to try what might be a new form.”

The workshop is 7:00-9:00 pm on Thursday 9th at Knights Court, Balderton Gate. If you’d like any further information, or would like to let us know you’re interested in coming along, please drop us an email at fosseway.writers@mail.com
