Our next formal meeting on Thursday 2 March (7-9 pm at Knight’s Court) is a workshop on a subject that can sometimes come across as a bit of a ‘Marmite’ genre. Fantasy, like its close relation Science Fiction, is something many people either love or hate (or often just ignore as being not ‘proper’ writing). But should you dismiss a genre that has such passionate devotees (are there any more committed than the fans of Tolkien, Pratchett and Rowling?), that draw on existing mythologies (in which case we can add Bram Stoker and Homer to the list), and which is responsible for multi-million dollar worldwide sales and blockbuster movie adaptations? And that’s before we get to the best part: letting your imagination truly run free.
Julie Malone, the founder and president of New Writers UK, will be joining us on Thursday evening to talk about the fantasy genre and why budding writers should perhaps take another look at the possibilities that lie just beyond the confining bounds of reality.

Although now a resident of Nottinghamshire, Julie was born in West London and moved to Sherborne at the age of seven, spending a happy childhood growing up in Dorset where she stayed until her early teens. It was a visit to Wookey Hole caves that sparked her interest in the history and legends surrounding the Mendip Hills and ultimately led to the creation of The Winterne Series (writing as Karen Wright). The stories of fabled tunnels from Glastonbury Abbey to the outlying villages allowed her imagination to run wild with the endless possibilities of what may lie within the undiscovered caves.
